The Fragile City

I arrived on a small island off the northwest coast of Taiwan. Many hidden stories have been buried there for decades. To me, it felt like one of the cities from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities—a fragile city quietly resting on the island.
Only recently, this fragile city revealed itself: through a narrow window in a solid fortress, through a drawing on a thin piece of paper. I believe someone left it for us, long ago.
I started a kind of fragile construction—bringing together things that are hidden, fading, or delicate. When placed together, they become balanced and strong.
The unusual way the works connect—fragile or strong—might reflect the state of many cities today.
