Column
2023
Sin Pin Pier-Absolutely Art Space,Taiwan
Sculpture (ramie fiber/paper)
Column uses fiber techniques—such as weaving, knotting, and folding—to build new "columns" inside a open space that was once a shipping company warehouse.
During the making process, the softness of the material is shaped in response to mechanical forces, allowing flexible fibers to take on structural strength.
The column, a basic element of architecture, also carries symbolic meaning. It usually gathers weight from above and transfers it vertically, allowing people to move across different horizontal levels.
In this work, the column becomes both the goal and the question: built with soft, non-load-bearing materials, it loses its functional strength, but gains symbolic power. These columns, no longer supporting the building, instead invite psychological responses from viewers and define the unique qualities of the surrounding space.
The work highlights invisible forces—such as the resilience of materials, a different kind of structural logic, and the negative space created between the column and the space.
